The Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI) is a grant-funding programme under which HLF support schemes led by partnerships of local, regional and national interests that aim to regenerate the historic environment in towns and cities across the United Kingdom. Together with other organisations, they contribute to a common fund which is managed by a partnership to allocate funds towards conservation work on individual projects and support a range of activities that encourage involvement in the built heritage and improve understanding and enjoyment of it.
The THI is one way of promoting conservation as an essential part of urban regeneration. In March 2003 a detailed development study was completed on the buildings in Lurgan. The study identified key buildings that were derelict or underused and in need of repair. Twenty seven buildings were considered to be key buildings and formed the THI’s. Over the five year duration of the project we hope to restore all of the twenty seven buildings and also encourage other building owners in the town to maintain the upkeep of their buildings thus preserving the townscape character of the town. www.sustainandbuild.com.s3.amazonaws.com/casestudies/lurgan.wmv
